This lot represents coffee from a group of 180 producing families from Sierra Juárez, Oaxaca, Mexico. Farm sizes here range from 0.5 to 5 hectares, yielding up to 150 kilograms of parchment (pre-milled coffee) per year. The group is led and managed by Romulo Chave. Over the last few years, Romulo has been focusing heavily on establishing direct relationships with green coffee buyers, to realise the best possible prices for producers in the Los Machos group. The group is informally structured, but it has a very strong emphasis on community. It is common for neighbouring producers to exchange services with each other outside of monetary compensation. For example, one producer might help the other with their harvest, then “repay” them with a hearty lunch. Then, the other producer will do the same in return, helping them once their lot is ready for harvest, and so on.
