Leonel Calambás

Leonel Calambás has been involved in coffee his whole life. He owns a farm named El Jardín in the town of San Vincente in the municipality of Inzá, in the Cauca department of Colombia. El Jardín is mostly populated with Caturra variety coffee trees. More recently, Leonel has introduced other varieties to the mix, such as Colombia (which coincidentally has the same name as the country). Colombia variety coffee trees are very robust, and are resistant to “Coffee Rust”, a foliar disease which causes the leaves of the coffee tree to fall off, resulting in drastically lower yields, and eventually the death of the tree. The Colombia variety was originally released in Colombia 1982, and it was engineered and designed to combat the anticipated outbreak of the Coffee Rust in the country at the time. The variety itself is a hybrid of Caturra and Hibrido de Timor varieties.
