Izuba Washing Station

Izuba is the name of the washing station from which this coffee was processed. Izuba is located in Kabarore, a commune (administrative division) in northern Burundi, bordering with Rwanda. The station has two managers, Ntama Appolinaire and Prosper Merrimee, and 250 seasonal workers, all of whom are local to the area. Coffee cherries are collected and delivered from Izuba’s immeadiate surrounds; it is encompassed by three collines (Burundi’s smallest subdivision) called Kigeri, Ryamukona, and Mugoyi, and there is a nearby freshwater river which the station uses as a resource for processing the coffee. Izuba provides payment to producers and staff members at a premium where possible — in 2020, staff were paid 33% higher than the national average salary in Burundi.
