Narrative

Henrique Sloper grew this coffee on his farm, Fazenda Camocim in Espirito Santo, Brazil. In 1962 Olivar Araújo (Henrique’s father), moved to Fazenda Camocim and for more than 30 years Olivar replanted trees, protected nascent species and recovered the soil, while becoming known as a pioneer in the production of organic coffees in this region of Espírito Santo. The farm was succeeded by his son Henrique Sloper, who was also president of BSCA (Brazil Specialty Coffee Association). Camocim’s evolution continued under Henrique, with a renewed focus on high quality organic coffee free from agrotoxins. Through trial, research and collaboration with like-minded farmers overseas (including Australian vineyards) Camocim began to produce biodynamic coffee. Camocim is the first biodynamic farm to win a Cup of Excellence competition, and in 2017 Henrique’s coffee won the Brazil Natural category. Camocim is also the first farm from the region of Espirito Santo to win a Cup of Excellence competition.
This component is made up of Catucai-Açu, a varietal that is a strain of Catucai developed by Brazil's Programa de Apoio Tecnológico à Cafeicultura (Procafe) in 2000. Catucai itself, is a hybrid of the Catuai and Icatu varietals and is well-known for high productivity and good yields.
